NECW presents A FIGHT FOR ALEX, Saturday Night, April 10 at Carver High School in Carver, MA

Fight for Alex

New England Championship Wrestling engages in a different kind of battle, when it comes to Carver High School, 60 South Meadow Road in Carver, MA on Saturday night, April 10th with a 7 PM bell time.

New England Championship Wrestling and the Carver High School Student Council join forces for A FIGHT FOR ALEX, a benefit show for 3 ½ year old Alex Wawrzyniak. In April of 2009 Alex was diagnosed with Pilocytic Astro Cytoma Low Grade Glioma, a very long and technical word for brain cancer.

His journey began after Alex had been complaining of leg pain. In the beginning, it was shrugged off, assuming it was just growing pains. An appointment with his pediatrician was made soon after who then ordered an x-ray to check for a fracture in his leg, which came back negative. He recommended an orthopedic consult at Mass General Hospital, where nothing out of the ordinary was found. He was then referred to a neurologist, who ordered an MRI. They had asked if he complained of headaches, which he did. He would constantly curl up into a fetal position trying to relieve the pressure in his head. After another agonizing couple weeks of waiting, the family finally got the MRI report. The results were they had found lesions in his spine. After more detailed looks at the results, they reported that he had multiple lesions on his spine that were in clusters, sort of like grapes on a vine. They also found cancerous cells within in brain, like frosting on a raisin. These cells caused his spinal fluid to build up resulting in headaches secondary to hydrocephalus. Eventually Alex had to have a shunt placed in his head to relieve the pressure and to hopefully save his vision. The surgery successfully worked on the fluid, but sadly his vision was damaged to the point where he is now legally blind. Shortly afterwards he began chemotherapy, once a week for at least a year.

It will be a long road for Alex but his strong will and determination will get him through the bad days. He continues his treatments at the Dana Farber’s Jimmy Fund Clinic in Boston. He is leading a fairly active life, finding moments of happiness in each and everyday. Alex will be starting preschool soon and will learn to read and write Braille. Aside from the constant doctor’s appointments, Alex is an average 3 year old. He loves to watch Spiderman, Lion King, Calliou & many other shows. Alex loves to play with his train sets, action figures, matchbox cars, construction trucks & bike.
