IDOL WORSHIP

Last week on New England Championship Wrestling, Antonio “The Promise” Thomas had an open contract. Anyone could sign on the dotted line and get a chance to become the NECW Heavyweight Champion. I don’t think anyone expected to see the name that did appear on that contract, Jonny Idol. Idol is a man who hadn’t been seen in NECW for 8 years.

It’s interesting that this happened a week after Jeremy Prophet proclaimed that the veterans of NECW needed to step aside and let guys like him take the spotlight. I’m sure that Prophet will have some interesting things to say about that development.

Jonny Idol has a track record that speaks for itself. He is a former NECW Tag Team and Television Champion. Historically, he has been very deserving of his nickname, “The Egomaniac”. Never at a loss for confidence, it should be no surprise that Idol felt he could walk into NECW after a very long hiatus and walk out the NECW Heavyweight Champion. Although, I think you might find quite a few wrestlers in the NECW locker room, Prophet leading the charge, who take exception to Idol getting the opportunity.

Say what you will about how he got there, but Idol did everything he could to take full advantage of the chance. He pushed Thomas to the limit and, after a devastating piledriver, was a half of a second away from becoming the NECW Heavyweight Champion. Thomas was able to retain, but not without a fight. If you questioned his merit for being in the match before, you didn’t when it was over. The champion showed nothing but respect for his challenger after the match.

Jonny Idol is back in New England Championship Wrestling. He is back to stay and he is focused on becoming a champion in NECW once again. Add another name to the list of men who are gunning for Antonio Thomas and his NECW Heavyweight Championship. The weather in New England is heating up and so is the competition for the region’s top prize in professional wrestling
